Understanding the Holy Spirit and His Gifts

This will be an 8 part series explaining The Holy Spirit and the Gifts He Grants us.  This part will be about the Holy Spirit and 2-8 will be about the gifts…..

PART 1- The Holy Spirit

When you get saved……you are granted a precious gift from The Lord, that gift is the comforter called the Holy Spirit.

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26

“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: John15:26

“Nevertheless I you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” John 16:7

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, once we find our salvation in Jesus; we are then sealed with the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption.  So many people forget how special the Holy Spirit is…..How precious it is to have a part of the Trinity in you…..This does not mean you are God or even a god (as some teach)…..you are still you, it is just that you now are a part of the body of Christ….

“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.” 1 Corinthians 12:27

This is very important because once we become a part of the Body of Christ, the Holy Spirit within us teaches us what it is we need to know…..and as members of the body, should we ALL not believe, preach, teach, minister, the same thing?

Now, because we are all different, the process of changes in our life is also different….there are some people who will change their habits, lifestyle, etc. immediately…. There are others that have a more gradual process.  This does not mean that they are filled any differently with the Holy Spirit, or that some are more special than others.  God loves all His children the same.

For example – an alcoholic gets saved and immediately quits drinking, never to be tempted or want to drink again.  Yet another alcoholic gets saved but gradually stops wanting to drink, and eventually will stop, yet others get saved and struggle with the addiction until they pass on.

All of these were saved, filled, and sealed with the Holy Spirit, but all of them were made differently.  This example applies to anything in your life you struggle with and with any sin. (I will do another blog on Sin later).  You see we are weak creatures and the Lord knows, (so does Satan), what our weaknesses are and He knows that He has to work on everyone in way’s only He knows how to, for He is the only one who truly knows you.

(I want to make it clear, drinking has nothing to do with your salvation and is not a sin until you allow it to take over your life, this is separate, this is regarding how you live your life for Christ once filled with the Holy Spirit.  So if any person tells you that you are not, or cannot be saved because you do drink, walk away…this is a demonic spirit, even a saved person can be of a demonic spirit at times….)

The most important thing to know is that YOU are not and will not ever be perfect and once you receive the Holy Spirit, you will start on your own journey (growth) with the Lord…..

Let’s continue….

So many people (especially today) are told that if they are truly filled with the Holy Spirit; they would not sin anymore; they should speak in tongues; they will be constantly happy; they will be wealthy, that their lives would reflect and should reflect proof that the Holy Spirit is within you and it must be life changing, I could go on and on,  Because of this many unsaved and saved believers feel unworthy, or feel that something is wrong with them because their life doesn’t reflect what they perceive others’ lives reflect or what they are told their life should be like.  This is causing mass confusion, mental torment, and wondering if you are saved or not, or wondering if you are worthy of being saved.

I want to tell you…..NO ONE reflects a perfect life (If you but look).  NO ONE is happy all the time. NO ONE is Sinless (we all sin but not all sinners). Should we as saved believers reflect Christ, yes, we should because of our love for Him.  That doesn’t mean we always do.

There are people I know that cuss up a storm and curse at everyone and everything.  Yet they will tell you they believe in the Jesus’s blood, that they are not perfect, and they know one day they will answer for their cussing when they come face to face with Jesus.  In other words, you should be able to discern the spirit the person has by their testimonies.  Said people can be filled with the holy spirit, but listening to a demonic spirit, by allowing themselves to get so worked up to cuss and curse others…and we should as fellow believers remind them not to talk like that…..we all need to be reminded at times.

“But now ye also put off all these things; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.” Colossians 3:8

Oppressing and Grieving the Holy Spirit

WE ALL (yes every one of us) have at times or still do at times oppress the Holy Spirit within us.  We can be oppressed by demons (i.e. depression, worries, fear, stress, pain, etc.)and we can in turn oppress the Holy Spirit

What does oppression mean?

“the exercise of authority or power in a burdensome, cruel, or unjust manner: the feeling of being heavily burdened, mentally or physically (i.e. anxiety, depression, torment, pain)”

We oppress the Holy Spirit by not listening to Him; let’s use the example above– people who curse others is not listening to the Holy Spirit who is telling them they ought not to talk like that… You see the believer eventually feels guilt but can push it away, (this is why you have saved people living a carnal life, because they have oppressed the guilt (chastisement) the Holy spirit placed upon them and eventually He gets harder to hear……however that’s the love of the Holy Spirit, He never forces, He gently guides and chastises, and will work out a way to get you to hear Him again, and sometimes it will be after death.

There are many other instances of oppression of the Holy Spirit.  When we sin and before we sin, when we do something we know is wrong, the Holy Spirit is telling us, ‘no, don’t do that,’ or, ‘you know that’s wrong’. We oppress Him by doing it anyway. You see we exercise our authority in our willpower (choice) over listening to Him and this in turn grieves the Holy Spirit within us.

“And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30

The more we listen to the Holy Spirit, the more we grow in the ways of the LORD.

I want to take a moment to explain that the Holy Spirit is around the unsaved person as well, how else do you think we come to the Lord?  We were all unbelievers at one point, but the Holy Spirit around us pulled on our hearts and used our consciousness to pull us to him.  As a person we have a choice to listen or not, therefore we have a choice to get saved or not.  (See Holy Trinity and the Image of us)

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

When we receive the Holy Spirit He grants each of us gifts, it doesn’t matter how strong your faith is or how strong your belief, it has nothing to do with what you have done, still do, or will do.  We ALL get gifts, whether 1 or 2 or all.  Sometimes we get a little part of 2 or 3.  It all depends on what God wants to grant us.

I also want to add that God wants you to ask Him for gifts. He wants you to want to do things for Him….

(This does not mean that you will get whatever you want; He wants you to ask none the less. Just like witnessing.  You don’t know who will get saved from your witnessing, but God knows. That does not mean you are not to witness, you still witness no matter what.)

Every one of us is different, so why would the Holy Spirit give us all the same gifts….. It is also sad because many religions are teaching that if you are saved you are to get certain types of gifts and when people are not receiving those gifts they must not really be saved…..This is then causing saved people to misunderstand the Holy Spirit and how the gifts work. Instead they listen to a demonic teaching, and it is demonic. For anything that is confusing or keeps God’s people in limbo and torment is certainly demonic….

I’ve got good news for you…. but you must allow the Holy Spirit within you to work…..

You see, the Holy Spirit will grant you gifts as soon as you become saved, (There are many people today who don’t even realize that the Holy Spirit grants every believer gifts) sometimes you don’t even realize you have a gift and have had it for years until one day it hits you like a stone to the head and you realize what a gift you have…. I think every believer has had this experience.

Now, let’s begin in 1 Corinthians Chapter 12 Verses 8 -10…… these are the gifts of the Holy Spirit to the believers….

“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same spirit.” 1 Corinthians 12:4

“For to one is given by spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that on the selfsame spirit dividing to every man severally as he will. 1 Corinthians 12:8-11

Wisdom; Knowledge; Faith; Healing; Miracle Worker; Prophecy; Discernment of Spirits; Tongues; Interpretation of Tongues.

Not all will be given to every believer…. Some may only get the gift of Faith, while others may get wisdom, faith and prophecy.

The Lord grants us these gifts not just for our own benefit, (as they are beneficial in our spiritual growth and understanding), but for the Glorification for God.  We are to use said gifts for edifying of each other and witnessing to unbelievers.

“Even so ye, forasmuch, as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye many excel to the edifying of the church.” 1 Corinthians 14:12

And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.” 1 Corinthians 12:28

“God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his will?” Hebrews 2:4

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are blessings, not only in our life but in others as well. He knows what we can handle and what we can’t; He knows how to help us grow to obtain more gifts in our journey… as you can receive more gifts as you grow in the spirit…..(I have experienced this myself)

“Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 1 Corinthians 12:29-30

The Comforter

The Holy Spirit was given to the Saved to comfort us in our times of trouble.  When we are struggling He is there to bring us a semblance of peace.  A calm in the storm……….When you are alone, He is there. When you need to talk to someone, He is there…..He is and can be the best friend you will ever have.

Spend time with Him, learn from Him; listen to Him.  IT will change your life for the better and He wants to give you these things.

Do You Hear Him?

It is not only very sad, but heartbreaking, that so many of us make the Holy Spirit an insignificant part of our lives.  I include myself in this, but praise God, He gives us more than one chance, and the more we grow in Him, the more we learn how we cannot live in this world without the Holy Spirit.  I’m not talking about being alive, I am talking about living.  Because only with the Holy Spirit can  you have joy in your physical death, only with the Holy Spirit, do you not fear what is to come.  Only with the Holy Spirit, do you have the creator and savior of Mankind on YOUR side….. Only with the Holy Spirit will you talk with Jesus and see Heaven.

For all is one and one is all…… For the Glory be to GOD always.

“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” Luke 11:13
